Gebang Wedomartani Temple, Special Region of Yogyakarta
Sleman Gebang Temple is one of the tourist attractions of Jogja which is a relic of the past civilization of life. Like the legend of the Gebang Temple, in every establishment of a temple must have a story, background, moral message to events that are displayed in every part of the building. The location of the beautiful Gebang temple in Jogja is in the hamlet of Gebang, Wedomartani, Ngemplak, Sleman. Or about 11 KM from downtown Yogyakarta.
The History of the Gebang Temple
The discovery of the Sleman Gebang Temple began with a resident who was hoeing and then found a statue called the Ganesha Statue. Next restoration was carried out and led by Prof. Ir. F.R Vant Romondt in 1937 to 1939. One of the evidence of the restoration when it was seen on the roof top in the form of a cylindrical phallus. The Ganesha, Yoni, and Nandhiswara statues are in the eastern, western niches, to the left of the entrance and in the Yogyakarta Gebang Temple booth. Then the worshiped Deity resides in the main chamber.
The Gebang permai temple in Yogyakarta is unique compared to the existing temples. The uniqueness of this tourist spot in Yogyakarta is the absence of stairs that connect the temple to the main chamber, making it difficult for tourists who want to see the gods. It was suspected that the Sanjaya Dynasty built the Gebang Condong Chess Temple with the aim of not being carelessly entered. So, anyone who wants to see the god in the main room must use bamboo or wooden stairs.
Sitting Ganesha Statues.
At Gebang Wedomartani Temple, the Ganesha statue sits on a yoni located behind the temple wall. Then at the top of the Sleman Gebang Temple the shape is different, not ratna or stupa, but a linga in the form of a lotus flower.
Plain Temple.
The origin of the beautiful Gebang Temple Jogja was built in 730 - 800 AD, seen from the architecture and the shape of the temple which is plain / without relief. Yogyakarta Gebang Temple looks small around a large temple yard, even the size of this temple is only 5 x 5 M with a height of approximately 7 M. However, Gebang Wedomartani Temple still looks beautiful with good care of the temple and surrounding gardens.
