History of the Vredeburg Fortress in Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta tourist attractions do have a variety of unique, historical, and unique beauty. If you come to Yogyakarta, it's not complete if you haven't visited Malioboro Street. Vredeburg Jogja Fortress is a building located opposite the Presidential Palace. The building is one of the buildings that become the Jogja tourist location on Jalan A. Yani or in the Zero Kilometer area of Yogyakarta and is in one segment with Jalan Malioboro. The building was originally famous as the Rustenburg Fortress which was built around the 1760s.
The history of the establishment of Vredeburg Fort, was proposed by the Netherlands through the delegation of WH Governor Van Ossenberch, with the aim of maintaining the stability and security of the Government of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. It took 5 years to realize the idea from the Netherlands, because it had to wait for the blessing of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Development Vredeburg Fortress actually only perfected the existing building, Fort Rustenburg. Frans Haak was the architect assigned to lead the construction of Fort Vredeburg in Yogyakarta. Then the name Rustenburg Fort was renamed by the name Yogyakarta Fort Vredeburg which has the meaning of Peace.
The plan of Vredeburg Fort Jogja is square and its location faces west. There is a bridge before entering the main gate, this is used as the main connecting line which is used as a road to enter and exit Vredeburg Fort in Yogyakarta. The entrance gate of this fort has the characteristics of classical European (Roman Greek) architectural architecture. This is evident from the tympanium section there are four pillars that support the Doric style.
Actually Fort Vredeburg is the official property of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. But on behalf of the Dutch, Fort Vredeburg Yogyakarta finally transferred ownership to the Dutch Government (VOC) under the supervision of Nicolaas Harting (Governor of the North Coast). The original (original) state of Yogyakarta's Vredeburg Fort was actually surrounded by a moat which served as an initial form of defense from enemy attacks. Whereas at the moment the trench is only partially left in front of the main gate and functions as drainage.
Until now, we can still find bastions in the corners of the fort. Among the names of the bastion are Jayapurusa (northeast), Jayawisesa (northwest), Jayaprayitna (southeast), and Jayaprokosaningprang (southwest). While on the inside of Vredeburg Fort in Yogyakarta, there is a building called the South and North Pengapit. It is estimated that this building was previously used as an administration office.
Since the construction of Fort Vredeburg in Yogyakarta, it has changed its function several times, as you now know. Fort Vredeburg is used as one of the museums in Yogyakarta. This building can also be an alternative and at the same time you enter in the list of Yogyakarta tourist attractions that you will visit.
