Ratu Boko Temple

To find out the history of the construction and function of buildings in the Ratu Boko Temple Palace, it can be seen from the inscriptions found in this complex. from a source of the Walaing Inscription that reads 792 AD it contains a memorial to the establishment of Abhayagiriwihara by Rakai Panangkaran.

Based on building structures and inscriptions found here, Ratu Boko Palace was originally a monastery used for a Buddhist priest named Abhayagiri. Then in 856 AD, the Ratu Boko complex was used as a palace by Rakai Walaing Pukhumbayoni who was a Hindu. So, do not be surprised if here you find elements of Buddhism and Hinduism in one location.

You can find these Hindu elements and see them easily, through Archa Genesha, Durga, Yoni, three miniature temples, silver and gold plates bearing the spells of Hinduism. As for the Buddhist elements, you can see the ruins of stupas, stupas, and Buddhist statues.

Ratu Boko Palace Complex is usually referred to as a palace, this is due to its similarity to the shape of a palace and has been alluded to in an inscription. In a literary book Bharatayuda, Gatotkacasraya, kresnayana, and Bhomakawya mentioned, that the palace is a building surrounded by a fence, there is a pond inside, a building used as a place of worship and a square outside it.

Based on its location, the building of Ratu Boko Palace can be grouped in 3 parts, including the eastern, western and southeastern groups. The buildings are located on each terrace that has been made on the back to the very top (hilltop). Each terrace is separated by andesite stone fence with a height of 3.50 m and the cliff of the terrace is reinforced using an andesite stone structure. To the south of the courtyard consists of a fence made of andesite, while to the north consists of a carved hill wall.

For the southeastern part of Yogyakarta, this one consists of a gate, a floor, a pringgitanm batur patur pendopo, a miniature temple, ruins of a stupa, a perimeter wall and two pool complexes. Both pond complexes are limited by a fence that has a gate as the entrance. At the bottom of the pond carved Yoni phallus on the parent (bedrock). As for the eastern building group, it consists of a pond and two caves (Gua Lanang and Gua Wadon). Thus a glimpse of the description of the Ratu Boko Palace, it's time you witnessed the beauty and splendor of this one of Yogyakarta's tourist attractions.
