The History of Happy Loka Zoo in Jogja

The start of the construction of the Happy Loka Zoo Jogja stems from the idea of ​​Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII in 1933 who wanted an entertainment venue. Then the hiburat place was named Kebun Rojo. The idea could be realized by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX who was assisted by a Dutch architect named Ir. Karsten.

Which then Ir. Karsten chose a location located west of the Winongo River. The place becomes his choice, which is the most ideal location to realize the ideas of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII, namely the construction of entertainment venues (Kebun Rojo). The construction of the Rojo Garden was halted due to World War II and the Japanese occupation.

After World War II was over, in 1949 the process of moving the State capital from Yogyakarta back to Jakarta took place. An idea was pioneered by Januismadi and Hadi. SH to build a place of entertainment and will be given to the people of Yogyakarta as a memento.

The idea received a very good response from the people of Yogyakarta, although the realization of these ideas can not be felt. Until finally in 1953 the Yogyakarta Loka Foundation was founded and chaired by Sri Paduka KGPAA Paku Alam VIII. Until finally the development of Kebun Rojo can be realized.

In 1958, KGPAA Paku Alam VIII appointed Tirtowinoto to continue the development of Happy Loka (Tirtowinoto was chosen because of his love of nature and great interest in the development of Happy Loka). Thanks to thoughts and contributions, tirtowinoto in the case of the happy local development was proven to have a rapid impact with the large number of visitors.

Finally in 1978 when the collection of animals became more complete, visitors to the Happy Zoo Loka could reach 1.5 million visitors. Thus began the ideas and history of the Gembira Loka Zoo in Yogyakarta.
